it's been a long time since i posted here but i often read your messages when ian (dansk) logs on.
as most of you will know, ian will be going back into hospital on monday for an allogeneic stem cell transplant and will be away from the forum for a good few weeks (hopefully he'll be back home within 4-6 weeks).
last time he was in hospital many of you sent messages to his ward and i know they cheered him up immensely.

Marie and I are just back off holiday - we thought of you both a lot whilst we were away. Thanks for your posts that are keeping everyone informed - you are as strong as Ian is and we all appreciate your efforts.
We have just sent an ecard to Ian, what a good idea that is - don't think they have that system down here in Essex.
Here's to hoping that the days get easier as time goes on for both of you.

My first opinion was that is was utter rubbish.
However, it is a break from the pretty predictable offerings of the past and I don't expect to grow to 'love' it but it certainly stands out and will be instantly recognizeable as the logo for the London Olympics.
Let's get away from the boring and the staid. In the end, my prediction is that the logo will be a winner.

You are so right about the English countryside - it is breathtaking isn't it? I spent a lot of my childhood in Kent, the Garden of England. I love England to bits, and the West coast of Scotland and the Isle of Skye are lovely too. I remember driving along the Antrim coastal road with it's spectacular scenery. Wales has got some great driving roads and some nice scenery too.
As for other countries, I have to agree with others that Switzerland is a superb place and I am going back there next month. My favourite country for diversity has to be South Africa - it really is a 'world in one country'. Seen Kruger and lot's round Cape Town including the Winelands but want to go back to drive the Garden Route.
I love USA too - California was fantastic, especially the coast route up from L A to San Francisco. Florida was rather uninteresting apart from the wonderful attractions near Orlando and Sanibel Island near Clearwater was fabulous. New York was everything I expected and more! Loved the frenetic pace and the buildings are awesome. Must go back - forgot to do a tour of Bethel!!!!!!!!!! Not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

apart from my other problems, i've had a really painful back injury for the last few weeks, which has made it impossible for me to sit comfortably at the pc.

watching the history channel on all the effort, expense and equipment that goes into mining them, cutting and polishing them, the above question occured to me.
so, except for industrial uses, what is it about them?
i mean, as far as looking at them, glass worth less than a nickel can look the same.
Jewellery, particularly diamond pieces are one of the very few articles that after you have finished with them you can take them back to a store and get some money back. You don't buy a coat, wear it for years then take it back and say can you work out the value please and give me some money?
Don't forget, whatever the retailer gives you will be the lowest price - he is gambling with his own money, the item may have to be broken up and the stone reset into a new more saleable item. All this costs money, and something is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay for it.
